A Litte Bit About Kingswood

Kingswood is a school made up of 215 students from Kindergarten through Grade Seven.   We are located in the Southern-East part of Richmond, and our school is made up of a diverse community from a multitude of cultural backgrounds, all of which are celebrated at our school each day.  Kingswood school was officially opened on October 28, 1976, by the then Associate Deputy Ministery of Schools, J. Phillipson.  Kingswood Elementary School was built to serve the newly built Kingswood subdivision in the area between Shell and No. 5 Roads, in southeast Richmond. 

Kingswood is a close, connected community where staff are dedicated to creating a supportive, inclusive learning environment for all of our students.  We have a small, but very dedicated Parent Advisory Committee that works hard to support the staff and students through regular activities such as movie nights, hot lunches, and this culminates in their year-end "Canadathon" fundraiser!  One of the things that stands out when you walk into the Kingswood school community is the focus on child-centredness.  This is obvious as soon as you open the doors and walk into our Library Learning Commons place, which is the heart of our school, and is constructed as an open, inviting space, free of doors and other barriers.  This showcases Kingswood's commitment to ensuring that the focus of our school centres upon the children we work with each day.  Kingswood is organized into pods, whereby classrooms can open up to one another, with a common pod foyer in each space.  This allows teachers and students to work together collectively, sharing these common spaces when they want to work together as a "pod community".

VISION, MISSION, VALUES (School District #38, Richmond)

The Board of Education recognizes the power of the Vision, Mission and Values Statements in transforming learning, leading and teaching in the Richmond School District. The intention of the regulation is to invite members of the Richmond School District community to engage in regular discussions about these statements and to live them in our schools, workplaces and community. As a result of our shared commitment, implementation of the Vision, Mission, Values Statements shall be the joint responsibility of the Board, students and staff in collaboration with parents and our community.

Mascot/Logo change

During the 2016-17 school year we had decided to change our school mascot/logo. The reasoning behind the change was for us to have a mascot that could be visibly seen right here in Richmond, thus creating more of a connection with our community. The concept of “place” is very prevalent in Aboriginal culture and with the new curriculum’s emphasis on Aboriginal content, we felt this would be the ideal time to incorporate the change. The students and staff had decided that the new mascot would be the eagle. Along with a new traditional mascot we had also incorporated an Aboriginal logo that was created by a former Kingswood student of Coast Salish decent, Atheana Picha. We are very proud and happy with the results. There will also be a school wall mural painted on the main front exterior wall of the school during the month of Septemeber 2017. The mural will depect scenes of the Richmond community with the bald eagle (our new mascot) being the central figure. We also wanted to explore the questions; What makes us unique? What do we value? How do we define ourselves as members of the Kingswood community?
