About Kingswood

Kingswood Elementary School was officially opened on October 28, 1976, by then Associate Deputy Minister of Schools, J. Phillipson.  The School was built to serve the newly created Kingswood subdivision in the area between Shell Road (West) and No. 5 Road (East), and Williams Road (South) and Blundell Road (North). The Kingswood Elementary catchment has increased in size since the school was opened, and now includes students as far West as #4 Road, as far North as Westminster Highway, and as far East as #7 Road.

Currently Kingswood Elementary is home to 215 students from Kindergarten through Grade 7.  We are a diverse community, with students from many different cultural backgrounds. We take opportunities through each school year to learn about and celebrate the different cultures of our community.

The architectural design of Kingswood makes it unique amongst all Richmond elementary schools. The physical space at Kingswood is organized into 4 different pods. Each pod houses 4 classrooms that open to a learning commons space in the centre. These learning commons spaces become an extension of the classrooms in the pod and are a space where students and classes can work together in a collaborative way.  Each classroom has a sliding glass door can open a classroom up to include the learning commons spaces in the pod.

Kingswood is a close, connected community where staff are dedicated to creating a supportive, inclusive learning environment for all of our students.  We have a small, but very dedicated Parent Advisory Committee that works hard to support the staff and students through regular activities such as movie nights and hot lunches.

Mascot/Logo change

During the 2016-17 school year we decided to change our school mascot/logo. The reasoning behind the change was to have a mascot that could be visibly seen outdoors here in Richmond. The concept of “place” is very prevalent to Indigenous  people, and with the curriculum’s emphasis on learning about Indigenous culture, we were moved to choose an animal that had significant and important meaning to the First Peoples of the West Coast. The students and staff chose the eagle as our new mascot. Along with a new traditional mascot, we also incorporated an Indigenous logo that was created by a former Kingswood student of Coast Salish decent, Atheana Picha. We are very proud of our mascot and logo. There is also a school wall mural painted on the main front exterior wall of the school. The mural depicts locations in the Richmond community with the bald eagle (our new mascot) being the central figure.
