Staff Hunch - Increasing Reading for Joy in our Students

An action that we have taken to support our school’s learning focus is:

At our April 24, 2026 Professional Development Day Kingswood Staff met to look at our initial Spring RFRA results. We were very happy to see growth and progression in our students Reading Comprehension Skills. Despite seeing improvements in our student’s Reading Comprehension, the question was posed by members of the staff if we felt our students read on their own and shared a love or joy for reading. The majority of Kingswood Staff had a hunch that our students did not typically read on their own, outside of school work.

Our action for the 2026-2027 school year will be promoting opportunities for students to read and fostering a love or joy for reading

This action supports our school’s learning focus in the following ways:

Staff worked together at the April 24th Professional Development Day to come up with fun, inclusive reading activities to schedule through the 2026/2027 school year. Ideas are listed below:

• Buddy Reading between different aged classes

• Family Team Reading Activities twice each term (Family Teams are made up of students from kindergarten to Grade 7 all on the same team)

• Pajama themed reading days

• Inviting guest readers to classrooms from Professionals in the Richmond Community (Police, Fire, Board Office, etc…)

• Book Swap Days where students bring books from home to donate and then take a new to them book home (Ms. K, our Teacher-Librarian had a Book Swap this Spring and it was very successful)

• Author visits

Kingswood Staff will schedule and plan these activities at our first 2026/2027 Professional Development day on September 25th, 2026.
