Reading Comprehension Data - May 2026
| What targeted actions did we take to address our school’s learning focus? | On the afternoon of the December 1st 2025 Professional Development Day, Kingswood staff met to discuss the October 2025 Grade 1-7 RFRA Data. Classroom teachers made a commitment to focus on targeted reading comprehension strategies for their students through November 2025 to May 2026. At the April 24th Professional Development Day, classroom teachers had time to meet in Primary and Intermediate grade groupings to analyze their April 2026 Grade 1-7 RFRA Reading Comprehension Data. With the support of Karen Leung, our District Teacher Consultant, classroom teachers were able to evaluate if their targeted instruction to students of reading comprehension strategies worked. |
| What gap or problem were these actions intended to address? Why was this particular strategy/action chosen? | Our intention after completing the October RFRA with our Grade 1 to 7 students was to move students along the Proficiency Continuum from Emerging (15%) to Developing (37%) to Proficient (46%). We hoped with targeted Reading Comprehension Skill instruction specific to each classroom, we would see the Emerging % in May 2026 reduced, the Developing % reduced and the Proficient % increased in May 2026 |
| What does the evidence tell us so far? | Our October 2025 RFRA Reading Comprehension Data indicated: 15% of our Grade 1-7 students were at an Emerging Level in their Reading Comprehension 37 % of our Grade 1-7 students were at a Developing Level in their Reading Comprehension And 46% of our Grade 1-7 students were at a Proficient Level in their Reading Comprehension
After teaching targeted Reading Comprehension strategies in classrooms from November 2025 to May 2026, our May 2026 RFRA Reading Comprehension Data indicated: • Only 6% of our Grade 1-7 students were at an Emerging Level in their Reading Comprehension, down from 15% • 33% of our Grade 1-7 students were at a Developing Level in their Reading Comprehension, down from 37% • 61% of our Grade 1-7 students were at a Proficient Level in their Reading Comprehension, up from 46%. The May RFRA assessments indicate strong positive improvements in Reading Comprehension Skills among out Grades 1-7 students. |
| To what extent are the actions making a difference? | Classroom and Learning Resource Teachers anecdotally note their students are feeling more confident in their reading abilities and many students are performing better across different curricular areas. |
| How will we move forward accordingly? | Based on Kingswood Staff discussions at the April 24, 2026 Professional Development Day and at our May Staff Meeting, Next Steps will include: • Providing targeted literacy skills instruction to students in who are at an emerging level in Reading Comprehension • Planning themed Family Team events in the 2026/2027 school year that will promote a joy for reading – getting students reading more often. • Continuing to focus on teaching Reading Comprehension strategies in classrooms in the 2026/2027 school year |
